Force full database backup?

We're having an issue with 3 of the 9 databases on a single server. The error we get says that we need to take a full backup of the databases before it can do transaction log backups and truncation. We took an active full of the VM on Monday, but the jobs are still failing. Does an active full of the VM not count as a full backup of the DB? If not, is there a way to force a full backup of the DB? Thanks in advance
