Forward Incremental Job - Gone wrong!!!

Hi All

Please can someone help with the following. This is urgent.

Setup:
-Forward incremental
-Synthetic full to run on a Friday.

When the job was created, a full backup was not run first. Since then we have had 4 weeks of incrementals running without any synthetic fulls (error reported: Full point not found).

I ran full backup to stop this error but even after a successful synthetic backup the incrementals were not cleared.

I am now in the position where i have 500GB of incremental backups before my full backup, with no way of clearing these down using the synthetic full.

Can i just delete these? or do i need to be a bit more creative?

Hi Karl,

What is the retention policy settings for this backup job? And how many VBK files you have on the target repository?

Thanks for the quick response.

Retention policy is set at 6 points.

After running the full backup, i have now 1 VBK file and 40 VIB files.

Since you're using forward incremental backup mode, the retention policy will kick in only after you create another VBK file (full backup) and run at least 5 job runs (incremental). Once you do this, make sure you schedule synthetic fulls to run at least once a week. Hope this helps!

So all incrementals previous to the full backup should be cleared down after another week of incrementals (after the full backup) as long as the synthetic full runs as planned on Friday?

If so then i hopefully should be able to get away with this little mistake.
