Does Backup and Replication support ESXi as a target for restores?

I believe I found this in the manual:

"You can restore a VM to the ESX server of the same or later version than the server on
which the backup was created. For instance, if you created a backup of a VM running on
ESX 3.0, you can restore this VM to ESX 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2 and 3.5 or ESXi."

I'm new here and I just wanted to make sure I'm interpreting this correctly.

That's a good news. But the bad news is it don't have trial key for support ESXi. I get the following message when I use trial key in Veeam backup.

========================================================
Checking the license for the source host "localhost.localdomain"
Your Veeam Backup license does not allow processing of free ESXi.

Leoli,

This happens because you've got free version of ESXi, which is not supported, only paid (licensed) versions are supported.

Hi

esxi is supported backup and restores but only if you have the licensed version is esxi , the free version is not supported at all.

Does that explain it better?

Oh...I see. I don't know ESXi has licensed version. Thanks for your information.

Licensed ESX servers is basically how VMware makes all of their revenue ;)
Free ESXi in reality is nothing but a "demo" version with significant limitations.
