I'm looking to setup a GFS backup and retention job.
I have 2 Backup Repositories:
Daily Repository
Long Term Repository
I want to create the following:
30 daily incremental - Backed up to "Daily Repository"
4 weekly - full - Backed up to "Long Term Repository"
6 monthly - full - Backed up to "Long Term Repository"
1 yearly - full - Backed up to "Long Term Repository"
I am trying to do this all in the same backup Job but when configuring the option "Keep certain full backups longer for archival purposes" for GFS, i cant find an option to choose where these full backups for archival purposes are saved to, it want to save to the same "Daily Repository".
My question is:
how can i change the location of Grandfather and Fathers Full Backups?
If i cant change the location, is there a work around to be able to move the Grandfather and Father backups to the "Long Term Repository" after they're created?
1x Backup Job pointed to the "Daily Repository"
1x Backup Copy Job pointed to the "Long Term Repository"
The Backup Job can run daily and will use a retention policy of 30 days.
I recommend to let the copy job also run on a daily interval. Just to have a copy of daily restore points. But it's possible to only schedule it once per week.
Why?
Imagine you loose your entire production environment and the first backup on a Friday. you will only be able to restore from your 6 day old weekly restore point on the "Long Term Repository". Can your business survive with a 6 day data loss? Already 1 day of lost data will cost most businesses a lot of money.
