GFS Retention and Merging

Hello everybody,
i have a question about GFS handling at Veeam.

How are the monthly/quarterly/yearly backups created? Are these merged from previous backups or does Veeam create a new full backup on its own?

Example: 4x weeks, 4x month, 4x quarter. Is the monthly or quarterly backup created from the previous weeks or monthly backups or is an independent full backup created on the previously defined day?

Furthermore, it would be interesting to know whether I could use the created yearly backup to go into any day or week in case of a restore or whether I only have this one state at which the backup was created?

Example: User needs a certain file from last year and knows that he created it in calendar week 12.
