hardened repo & log collection

Post by mcz »

Hi everyone,

I was just creating a case for a strange issue regarding the health checks and now the engineer had asked me to collect some logs in the /var/log/VeeamBackup folder directly on the hardened repository. I did collect logs via the wizard in B&R prior to that and the answer was that the logs don't go back as needed...

Is this just a misunderstanding? Should the wizard be able to collect everything within that folder?

I think it's not ideal to have to connect to the hardened repository for log collection, because... well, it's hardened and it should stay hardened as long as possible. And for someone out there it might not be possible to access it without having to visit the location some hundret km's away...

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Your point on the Hardened Repository and collecting logs manually is clear; during log export, there is time range selector, did you by chance use the 2nd option for all logs or the 1st option for a specific time range? The latter may indeed have not included logs from a specific time period.

Hi David,

thanks for the quick reply. Yes, that might have been the case... But in general, does the built-in functionality do the same job as me just copying the whole /var/log/ folder?

Thanks!

Hi Michael!

Thanks for the feedback, let's assume it was that.

To your question, by default the log collector will just grab the VeeamBackup folder from /var/log or whatever location is set if the logs were directed elsewhere. The all time range option should grab all logs, but with a time range, it may indeed sometimes not grab older historical logs; for many issues, older logs aren't required, but for example a performance case might benefit from seeing the infrastructure items/job configuration used previously, and the default 7 day collection might not be enough.

It's really contextually specific, so I can't be more specific on why certain logs might not be grabbed in certain situations, but in general yes log export should work as you expect, just keep in mind that we don't grab all of /var/log, and sometimes the issue may reside in there, hence the request for the manual collection.

Hi David,

now I understand much better... The engineer asked for the whole /var/log folder, which of course is not covered by the wizard. However, I guess many others would benefit if the wizard was able to exactly collect "other" directories as well. Please consider this as a feature request.

Thanks!
best regards
