Hardened respository RAID mode?

Post by xmzmc »

Hi,

We're in the process of upgrading our infra and I'm doing the initial research/preparation for a hardened repository to use with Veeam Backup and Replication. I'm looking at the requirements: https://www.veeam.com/blog/installing-u ... itory.html and it lists RAID6(0) as a requirement. I was always told that parity RAID is somewhat a liability with larger disks these days. We plan to use a couple of 4TB+ disks and I wonder if RAID6(0) is recommended and if it is a hard requirement? In part 1 of that blog (https://www.veeam.com/blog/hardened-lin ... tices.html), RAID10 is mentioned so I wonder if that's usable instead. Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance

Hello,
RAID6 is a recommendation, not a hard requirement. From a price / value perspective, most customers go for RAID6(0). RAID10 is also fine for sure. I just wanted to ensure that nobody configures RAID5 today because that risk sounds too high.

From a technical point of view, even RAID0 works... but that would be a bad idea of course :-)

Best regards,
Hannes

A reply from the author himself, nice. Ok that's something I can work with. Thank you for the quick reply and info!

Also do keep in mind we recommend 3 copies or 2 backups of the data
