Help with finding out why there is so many VIB files

Post by spiritie »

Hi Veeam Forums

On our repository we are getting a bit low on storage which we shouldn't be according to our growth.
Taking a quick glance on one of our extents in our SOBR I'm seeing many old .vib files.
Just for one folder/backup job I checked 39 files out of 134 are to old.

I've confirmed that the file names are not part of the chain under Disk

Our retention is set to 7 days for all jobs (always has been), and we have the "Remove deleted items data after 7 days" on all of ours jobs.
So in theory nothing should exist over 14 days at worst, except if I'm missing out on something?

Here is an example:

I've also confirmed that there is nothing under Disk (Imported)

How would one go about to fix this issue? Is there any way to force Veeam to delete these stuff?
This could turn into some tedious work as there is 9 extents in total in this SBR with many backup jobs / folders on each extent.

Is there something I've overlooked, any help would be appricated.

Regards.

Veeam doesn't seem to be aware of the files at all after I deleted them and rescanned the SOBR:

Hi Gert,

Please provide a support case ID for this issue, as requested when you click New Topic.
It's mandatory when you post a technical issue.

Also, just to clarify - these "extra" .vib files are elder than the latest full (.vbk) backup, right?

Thanks!

Hi Natalia

My apologies, I wanted to create a forum post just in case there was anything obvious that I'm missing.

I'm not sure if support case can help in case, they would properly just be able to assist in locating the files, which I hoped someone else had maybe done in the past with some sort of script.

They could help in identifying the reason why these files have not been deleted according to retention. Could be some sort of a glitch as those were correctly removed from the database - the fact that you were able to rescan the repository without any errors after deleting them proves this. Keep an eye on this repo for some time and feel free to contact support directly in case you see similar behavior in the future.

I'm done cleaning up on all the extents in the SOBR, I cleared up around 7100 files that totaled in at around 35 TB.
I archived all meta data for: the file names, date modified, file sizes and which extent the files were located.
I create a support case after I'm back from vacation next week.

Let us know what you find; once in a while I see undeleted uncatalogued backup files hanging around myself, though it is rare.

Hi Foggy

I no longer work for this company, but I'm interested in if the case got resolved or not?

Is it possible to get some insight, or is that not allowed?

Just wanna make sure if this is a more widespread bug or something related to the setup.

Case #04522644

Hi Gert, I've checked the case and it was closed due to no response from your side - I believe they couldn't continue investigating without your involvement.
