Hot Add
Hi,
We recently setup a proxy in virtual appliance mode and this works great for incremental but we had an issue with one particular vm when doing a weekend active full backup.
During the backup of this server it said hot add wasn't supported for the disks yet this works fine during incremental backups?
Any ideas why it would work in one type of backup but not the other?
Thanks
Lee

Re: Hot Add
Hi Lee,
Do receive any mistake from VBR, like “output: --wn:Hot add is not supported for this disk, failing over to network mode...\n” ?
Have you tried to test hot add manually?
By the way, what version of Veeam B&R are you at? Thanks.

Re: Hot Add
Full backup job runs as well as incremental should not have any difference, so debug logs review is required here.

Re: Hot Add
Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
Yes we got the message "Hot add is not supported for this disk, failing over to network mode"
As I said though this same VM works during the weekly incrementals it was just during the Active Full we got this message.
Which log files should I look through for more details?
Thanks
Lee

Re: Hot Add
Lee,
Please check this KB article outlining hot-add mode limitations. Probably, some of them apply to your case.
You can find logs in Menu>Help>Support information, but the best way to review logs is to contact Veeam support team.

Re: Hot Add
I've reviewed the KB article and I think we're OK.
I'll log a support call to review the logs.
Thanks

Re: Hot Add
We had a problem recently where our Proxy VM was on a VMFS3 datastore and a large Exchange server was on a VMFS5 datastore. Because the proxy was on VMFS3 and the drive was bigger than it could mount, hot add would fail.

Re: Hot Add
Thanks for your email.
Yeah both are on the same datastore which is VMFS5 and the confusing thing is it works for the incrementals which still require the disk to be mounted!
Thanks

Re: Hot Add
Hi.
Support have reviewed the logs and found the following :
After reviewing service log I found that ProxyLoadAnalyzer returned us next:
Trying to get best proxy for task [xxxxxxxxx from job "Nightly Backup (Full)"
Filtering invalid proxies...
Finished filtering invalid proxies.
Found [1] valid direct access proxies. Trying to find less loaded.
Trying to find less loaded proxy for [HotAddDifferentHosts]-access proxies
Source hotadd proxy [3f5c364b-15b0-479d-9c78-31c9befd7af2] is already in use by this task, skipping
Wasn't able to find less loaded proxy
It means that the proxy server that allows us to use HotAdd mode was unresponsive or busy.
I will see what happens when this job runs again this weekend.
Thanks
Lee

Re: Hot Add
Thanks for updating the topic, Lee!
Looks like that was the issue.
Make sure your proxy is available for the next run of the job and see if it will use Hot-Add mode.
Please, keep us updated.
