How do you backup database servers?

Post by liviu.tutuianu »

Dear all,

We are in progress to replace the existing backup software with VEEAM. For this, we need to offer a good solution also for database servers. We have many SQL/ORACLE servers that need to be backed up. I would like to get from your experience what would be the best practice for this. And I refer to both online and offline backups.

Thank you in advance for your advises.
Liviu.

Hi,
for SQL databases, they support VSS libraries, so you can for sure use application-aware backups and guarantee database consistency and log truncation of them.
For Oracle databases, it depends by the version and underlying OS. If Oracle is at least 11g and is running on Windows, VSS is supported too, so the same applies as SQL.
If it an older release or it runs on other OS (linux or unix), you need to use scripting for pre-freeze/post-thaw in order to guarantee application consistency. Here you will probably have to stop the database for short period of times. If you cannot afford database stops, the only alternative is to use RMAN inside Oracle and then run simple crash consistent backups wth Veeam.

Additionally, this (Oracle) and this (SQL) topics might be also for some help. Thanks.
