How does the backup routine work?

Post by sandroalves »

Hi,

I created a task to make the backup daily and selected the servers.

I created another task to backup the same servers, but this will be executed monthly at the same time as the daily task.

When the monthly task runs at the same time as the daily task, will the monthly task prevail only?

Thanks.

Hi!
Both jobs will run in parallel that day, as scheduled. Both jobs will start backup by taking a VM snapshot, so it is not the best idea, as each VM will be double-snapshotted.
It is best to split schedules or instead of backing up same VMs twice that day, enable GFS Retention on primary job or use Backup Copy with GFS Settings.
/Cheers!

Hi,

grateful for the answer.

Will this occur even though both jobs are using the same repository?

Thanks.

Hi Sandro,

Yes, a job won't re-use the snapshot for the same machine created by another job.
I'd stick to Egor's advice and use GFS retention capabilities to form independent monthly backups
if that's what you are looking for.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am not referring to snapshot during the routine.

I mean the snapshot that is stored in the repository.

If even so, this is what you are reporting, I am confused.

In my daily JOB your enable GFS it works like this:

- Dialy at thist time: 10PM
- Retetion policy 7 recovery point
- Keep certain full backup longer for archival purposes for (3 monthly).

Does this mean that I will have 7 days and keep the last 3 months?

Or do you think you are saying to use another JOB for just the monthly using GFS?

Thanks.

Difference in terminology meaning makes it confusing. We refer to "snapshot" as VM Snapshot created in vSphere in order to create a backup of a virtual machine. "Snapshots" in the repository are simply "backups" in our glossary.
- each backup job generates a backup files chain, independent from other jobs. So you will have 2 backup chains with 2 backup jobs(aka Full+incrementals chain for each job)
- both options(GFS on primary job and GFS on Backup Copy are valid) however there are some differences how retention is applied and how Weekly restore points are selected - that's why I gave 2 links on documentation for you to read through and choose based on your best needs. GFS on Primary Backup Job is easier to set, however it has different logic of what is put into long-term archive(restore point selection), whereas Backup Copy is an additional Job, controlled separately, giving more flexible control options.
/Hope it helps!
