How to Backup a Shared Folder?

Post by WellMark » 1 person likes this post

I'm trying to backup the UNC shared folders located on my SAN, but I can't seem to find a way to do it?

For instance, HR stores all of their files on \\sfserverA\HR

How can I backup / copy all of those files, and then be able to search and restore single files from it?

Thank you!

Hi, Mark. There's no files backup functionality, as the primary purpose of our product is VM backup. Thanks!

Hi,

You can use File Copy Job to specify a UNC path to the share that you're willing to backup.

Thank you.

If you have a tape drive you can also use the Files to Tape Job. You enter the UNC path in the bottom field in the selection window.

[MERGED]: Backup of SMB Shares

Post by MarkLiechty »

I have a customer with a Neatgear ReadyNas that has several TB of low priority data. At some point late in the year they will be moving it to a low end SAN but for now I am trying to get a solution using Veeam that will allow a single backup solution.

The Veeam backups of VM are working perfect. The physical servers are great. What does the solution look like for the ReadyNAS? The data is sitting on SMB shares. No worries about how long the backups take or that restores would be forever or even file permissions. I just need ot be able able to get this data into some kind of backup in case of hardware failure or major human error.

Mark, other than using File Copy jobs mentioned above, you could use an iSCSI volume on the NAS (if it supports iSCSI) presented to some Windows box and back it up with Veeam Endpoint Backup installed on that box.

Does this only back up the root of the shared folder, or does it back up everything in that folder and all subfolders?

Zoltank,

If you present it as a volume and select the volume it should backup everything

I had a similar situation a few months back. We ended up going with the File Copy job that PTide described in this thread. This has been working successfully with no issues. Knock on Wood!!!
