How to backup external servers?
Hi,
we're using VBR 10, to backup our internal infrastructure (VMs and physical servers). This works perfectly fine.
We also have a few external Servers (windows mail server and windows/linux hosting) with admin/root privileges. How can we create backup jobs for these machines /what is the recommended way? If possible, we'd like to avoid setting up VPN connections from these machines to our Backup Server.
My first thought was to configure an external DSN record pointing to our external IP, forwarding required ports and setting up IP restrictions, so that only these machines could establish connections from the Internet to our internal VBR. Would that by possible?

Re: How to backup external servers?
Hi Jakub,
Could you please describe these external servers in some more details?
Do you mean some sort of service (like Office 365) or full servers that are hosted somewhere?
Thanks!

Re: How to backup external servers?
Hi Natalia,
these are standard Windows or Linux machines (dedicated servers with full admin rights) hosted by hosting companies. We usually get a an external IP, that we use to connect via RDP (Windows) or SSH (Linux). For example: https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/ex42-nvme

Re: How to backup external servers?
Jacub,
The correct way in your case would be to use a VPN. If you have to work without a VPN connection, you could try to open all the ports used by agents but this option is highly not recommended.
Also, you can ask for backup from your provider who hosts these servers. Usually, hosters do provide such an option as a part of their services offer.
Thanks!

Re: How to backup external servers?
Hey Jakub,
Looking at Hetzner's site, looks like they intend to keep this stuff internal, so you might want to check with them on allowed egress before you try moving an Agents backup out from their center. Since they have dedicated backup space as part of their offerings, you might be stepping on toes and I'm sure it's a subject you want to clear up before you find issues due to EULA concerns.
