How Veeam goes about Full Backup and Retention policy?

Post by FZANV »

We are using Forever Forward Incremental Backup with Active Full Backup. We are using five different disks. Each disk will be used for a whole week. On weekdays we will perform incremental backups and on Saturday an Active Full Backup.
Questions:
•When Veeam performs an Active Full backup on Saturday, how does Veeam goes about the Retention Policy. Will the next incremental backup be (reset to) the first Restore Point?
•Regarding protection of our data, Monday we want to move the disk from the previous week to a safe location. With other words, every Monday we will replace the disk of the previous week. Will Veeam create a Full Backup on Monday again?
•As put above; 5 disks, incremental on weekdays, Active full on Saturdays, replace disk on Mondays. What is the best way to go about such configuration? Especially regarding Retention Policy.

Thanks

Hello M.Maduro,

Once you schedule Active Full, your method is not Forever Forward Incremental, but Forward Incremental.

1. Note that since you use periodic Active fulls, the latest restore point will not be deleted until its whole chain it out of date in accordance with the retention.
2,3. When you use Rotated Media, new backup will be added to the existing chain on the media. Please read the provided link to user guide and this topic.
Thanks!
