Hyper-Threading for proxy / repository server yes or no?

Post by johannesk »

I'm trying to find clear information if Hyper-Threading should be enabled or not on proxy and repository server. The documentation talks about cores thus I would understand that as Hyper-Threading would not give you extra task per actual core. But I'm not sure. And if Hyper-Threading does not make it possible to do more backup threads, does it make worse and should be disabled?

Can you veeam folks make this clear?

Hello Jóhannes

You can run as much tasks you want on a single core. But it may make processing slower for every task if there is not enough real CPU cores available. Therefore our recommendation is based on real cores (2 tasks per 1 CPU core), not on the virtual amount of cores doubled through hyper-treading.

Hyper-threading won't make anything "worse", our product will just work fine with it. Just don't expect the same performance when running 4 tasks with HT instead of 2 task per Core. It's still a single Core which needs to process the 4 tasks.

We currently have HT disabled. And in our case, we have 2 powerful CPU's, each with 16 cores, and on full blast doing backup all the cores get tasks, but are only utilized about 10-20% most of the time and we see jobs waiting for resources because there is no core available.

Will enabling the HT make some tasks possible to utilize the CPU better?

Hi Johannes

How many tasks do you have configured on the proxy/repo settings?

The server has 32 physical cores and currently HT disabled.

We have the Max concurrent tasks on the proxy role as 30.

there are 5 repository extents in the SOBR and each configured with 5 concurrent tasks.
