Ideal way to setup windows cluster with shared storage and s
I currently have a SQL server on a virtual being backed up by Veeam, life is good.
We have decided we want to cluster it between 2 vms on 2 different hosts (in the same cluster though). To do this it needs shared storage which means a RDM. Do I do this in virtual mode ? Is this the ideal way to setup this type of environment ?

Hello Todd,
I'm not an expert in SQL clusters, but from what I know you need to have a shared storage and enable bus sharing to make it work. Since Vmware does not support snapshotting VMs with such kind of disks (engaged in bus sharing), these VMs can't be backed up with Veeam (neither with any other image-level backup solutions).

That is correct. MSCS requires SCSI bus sharing for storage, which in turn makes VM snapshots impossible with VMware. But image-level backup requires VM snapshots created. Thanks.

I'm afraid - no, as snapshots are not supported for these VMs.
