immutable backup, only for each new file

Post by KevM »

Hello.
I'm looking for a way to get a immutable backup from 1 folder from a Windows server.
I would like to backup the folder on a daily base, but only the new files. So the backup repository only contains 1 immutable copy of every file.
No incrementals, just a full immutable backup of every new file in that specific folder.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!

Hi Kevin
Welcome to the R&D Forums.

To have an immutable backup of your folder and files, you need to use Veeam Agent for Windows, a file level backup job and a linux hardened Repository (or a SOBR with capacity tier) as the backup target. The backup files will only be immutable, if your job creates regular full backups of the entire folder. I recommend to create weekly full backups.
Between the weekly full backup, Veeam will only backup changes to the folder.

Make sure to use xfs as the filesystem on the linux hardened repository for space less synthetic full backups.

Thanks

Thank you for your reply.

The problem is that I don't have the diskspace for a weekly full backup.
I have 80TB as well on my fileserver as on my repository.
I need to keep all files (fileserver + repo server) for 5 years. Every month there is at least 1 TB of new data.
Immutable sync is kind of what I want to do.

Hi Kevin

If you use reFS or XFS as the filesystem, veeam can use block cloning (FastClone).
This means, you get space less synthetic fulls. A Fullbackup doesn't use the entire size on the backup storage with FastClone.

You can also use File Share Backup Jobs. But this most likely need additional licenses. And immutability is not available for now. It is something we plan for vNext.
