Immutable backup question

Post by dahoove »

I am testing out backup up directly to BackBlaze which is a Veeam approved object storage service. I am noticing that if I go to object storage in the Veeam console the backups are not showing as immutable like they do with the job I have setup for to get stored on my local SAN's. Does Veeam rely on Backblaze Object lock function or did I do something wrong.

Hi David,

Correct, when using Object Storage, S3 native object locks are used to provide immutability. Basically, Veeam tells the S3 service (BackBlaze for you) how to handle the lock, and then the backup is immutable.

If you enabled immutability on this step of the Object Storage Repository, then your backups will be immutable. Try a quick test job to your repository that has immutability enabled, then try to delete the backup from the test job (use a short immutability period for this test), you will see that the deletion is prevented.

Thanks I just tried deleting the smallest server from the Object Storage area for that job and it failed due to being marked as immutable so I think I am good. I just was thrown off by it not showing immutable in the properties like local storage does.
