Immutable server build

Post by depps »

Hello,

Looking for some real world advice on specing out an immutable repository box.

We don't need more than 10TB so small by most standards.

My current thoughts are

DL380 Gen10 Xeon-S 4210 24 SFF
64GB Ram
14x 960GB SATA Mixed Use SFF SC MV SSD - RAID 6
HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 Ctrlr

Is SSD complete overkill? Should we just stick to 10K Spinning?

We currently use Windows Repos on DL360's and QNAP's presented as iSCSI (built 7 years ago!) but time to review and renew.

Hello,
I don't know which speed you need to fit your requirements, but from an immutability perspective it's fine.

I would put the OS on RAID 1. SSD is faster of course - but it's hard to guess whether you need it. If there is budget, I would go for SSDs :-)

Best regards,
Hannes
