Import Backup
Hello,
We want to import a backup from tape within veeam, the backup file (.vdk) is 1.2 TB big.
How long should this take?
Yesterday we waited for 6 hours and still the import wasn't successful.
Are there any other solutions within veeam for importing a backup from tape?
kind regards,
PeterK

Re: Import Backup
Peter, this could be some issue/incompatibility with storage device where your backup file is stored. Veeam Backup does not actually pull whole backup file locally during import backup, it just reads some information from the file and stores it in configuration database. So import should be pretty fast. We will be able to investigate what is causing this delay with logs from Help | Support information, please send these to support@veeam.com

Re: Import Backup
I would say it should take at most a few minutes. For a test I imported a backup from our DR copy. We are currently rsyncing our backups to a remote storage system at another facility about 8 miles away connected via a 1Gb MetroEthernet connection. I took the volume at that site and mounted it to our backup server here in our local facility via iSCSI. I selected the largest system we have, a VBK file that's 1.1TB (pretty close to your 1.2TB). It took about 45 seconds to import the backup and be ready to restore.
If it's taking hours, something pretty much has to be wrong.

Re: Import Backup
tsightler,
If your import requires only 45 seconds, there must be something wrong with mine.
I allready sent the logfiles to Gostev, lets wait and see.
thanks for replying!

Re: Import Backup
PeterK, by any chance, is your remote server Linux-based?

Re: Import Backup
I meant to ask, what is the server you are importing backup from?

Re: Import Backup
Gostev,
This is the same server as where the veeam software is installed, we attached a sata disk storage to the server, imported the backup from tape to the sata storage and then importing the file within veeam.

Re: Import Backup
Gostev,
We are in trouble again. Today i needed another import and we seem to have the same issue. It concerns a 1.5TB large VBK file which has been copied to anoter locally attached disk.
Once i start the import i notice VEEAMShell.exe popping up in the taskmanager catching a few percent CPU load and that's it. It hangs at please wait. It's running for 10 minutes now but nothing seem to happen.
I already made a support ticket. I hope this can be resolved.

Re: Import Backup
Ah update: no idea why but the 2nd attempt seems to do more.
I get a _imported backup in my backups screen, containing 5 VM's, but there should be a lot more. No idea what it is doing but it does something at least. I'll just let it run.

Re: Import Backup
Another update: It reports : file already exists, and it shuts down.
I deleted the old imported backup and i'm retrying now.
