In Place VEEAM Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2 upgrade
I am running VEEAM 8.0.0.2030 on a physical box. Currently the we have Server 2008 R2 as the OS for the VEEAM server. We have a VM that we backup that has dedupe enabled on its volumes but we cannot restore on file level. To take advantage of the Server 2012 R2 dedupe feature and be able to use VEEAM to do file level restores we need to have VEEAM installed on Server 2012R2.
Is it possible to do an in place server upgrade with VEEAM already installed and configured?
Thank you

Yes, this is possible. Don't forget to backup Veeam B&R configuration prior to performing upgrade, just to be on the safe side.

Yes - thank you for the reminder. We are already backing this automatically but I will double check.foggy wrote:Yes, this is possible. Don't forget to backup Veeam B&R configuration prior to performing upgrade, just to be on the safe side.

"foggy" -- do you know if I need to re-create the backup job for the VM that has dedupe enabled after the server OS upgrade? Thanks

No need to do that. You will even be able to perform restores from existing backups.

One more question -- Do I need to stop the VEEAM services before I run the in place OS upgrade?

Hi,
My 2 cents here:
As a precaution I'd suggest you to disable all activity of your VBR console (backup jobs, replicas etc.) prior to doing a configuration backup.
Thanks!

This is not required, however, I'd check that no jobs/restores are running.pmalinov wrote:One more question -- Do I need to stop the VEEAM services before I run the in place OS upgrade?

just a quick update - this OS upgrade went fine as far as I can tell. No issues with VEEAM. So far all jobs are running as expected.

People,
I have deployed Veeam Backup & Recovery (v8U3) and also VeeamONE (v8U2) as follows:
HQVEEAM01 - VBR 8.0 U3 main backup server and the Backup Copy repository - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
PRODVEEAM01 - VBR 8.0 U3 main backup repository server and Veeam ONE server - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
PRODVBPROXY01-VM - Backup Proxy 1 - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
PRODVBPROXY02-VM - Backup Proxy 2 - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
PRODVBPROXY03-VM - Backup Proxy 3 - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
PRODVBPROXY04-VM - Backup Proxy 4 - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1
So how and where do I start when performing the Windows Server 2012 R2 inline upgrade ?
Any steps or suggestion would be graetly appreciated.
Thanks.

[MERGED] Upgrading Windows
Our VEEAM Backup & Replication servers are currently running on Windows 2008 R2 and we are currently in the process of upgrading all our servers to Windows 2012 R2 to meet our refresh schedule.
We are currently Running VEEAM B&R 9.0.0.1715 (Update 2), and want to know if there are any issues if we perform the upgrade to Windows 2012 R2.
We also want to upgrade VEEAM to 9.5, so should that be completed first or should we upgrade Windows first.
Any information is appreciated.
Thank you

[MERGED] Upgrading Windows
Hi,
1. Perform configuration backup.
2. Upgrade Veeam B&R
3. Perform another configuration backup.
4. Upgrade Windows
5. If VBR is broken during OS upgrade, reinstall it and import configuration from the 2nd backup
Thanks
