Instant Recovery

Post by kbachman »

I'm evaluating version 5.02. We are running ESX 3.5 with VI 2.5

When I try Instant Recovery the backup mounts and runs perfectly. When I try to migrate the VM back to the SAN with storage motion I get the following Vmware error:
DMotion: Failed to create child disk '/vmfs/volumes/....../Win2008Test_..............

If I power down the mounted instant recovery backup and try the migrate again it works fine and the migrated server works as expected.

I want to do the migration with the mounted backup running. Do you have any suggestions.

Hello Ken,

You need to have VMware Storage vMotion licensed in order to migrate a live VM, otherwise please use VM copy or VM replication jobs.

Thanks.

Just wanted to add here that v6 will provide the new job type specifically designed to migrate running VMs, this should help those without VMware Storage VMotion licensed to finalize the Instant VM Recovery smoothly, with absolute minimum downtime. Thanks.
