Instant recovery VM not registering in vCenter Server 6.0

Post by guitarfish »

I use Veeam B&R v9 Update 1. I have been using it with vCenter Server 5.5. When I do an Instant Recovery, the recovered VM registers in vCenter and then I can power it up. This week I setup a new vCenter 6 server. The hosts and VMs haven't moved, but I removed them from the vCenter 5.5 inventory and added them in the the new vCenter 6.0 setup. Backup jobs run fine, but when I do an Instamt Recovery, the VM isn't registering in vCenter. I am able to see the recovered VM using the Windows vSphere Client, so I know the recovery is working, I just can't get it to show up in vCenter 6.

I've tried it with firewall off, not sure what else to do. What am I missing?

You mean via the vSphere web client? Did you try the advanced recovery wizard as well?

Yes, the recovered VM doesn't show in the web client for vCenter 6.0, like it would show in 5.5.
I didn't try advanced recovery wizard, I've never used that before.

Might be best to contact support if you can see it using the legacy vSphere client but not the web client.

I am NOT using the legacy client, I am using the web client as stated. The Windows client was only launched to verify the recovery did in fact work. I guess I'll have to contact support, I didn't think this would be that complicated. Very strange. Always worked in prior versions.

Not sure what you are referring to with the Windows vSphere client in the original post so I might confuse some type of client with the vSphere fat client.

Windows client, thick client, C# client - it has many names. NOT the web client, lol.
Instant recovery of a VM isn't showing in the Web client for vCenter Server.

It really has :-). Anyhow normally the web client should just reflect what you see in there so not sure why it doesn't. Could be permissions issue, bug in the web client,... So best to give a quick call with support and let them assist you with it.

So the end up with this issue is that when doing an Instant Recovery, on the Destination screen, the Host must be chosen from the vCenter server, not the Standalone hosts. This requires adding the vCenter server in the Backup Infrastructure section under Managed Servers. This wasn't required for Veeam to register a VM in vCenter 5.5, but it is in 6.0.
