I agree about market share, but I think it should be about expected (future) market share, not existing market share. It appears as though the landscape is changing fast. Please don't wait for everyone to go to a different storage solution before you finally integrate the two. +1 for Nimble. An integration would help Veeam, as storage is the bigger purchase. Businesses are more likely to buy backup software that works best with their storage solution, not the other way around.

I'm about to pull trigger and put in a Nimble CS300. Looking at DR and backup solutions. I currently use Unitrends but looking for something better. I setup a Veeam server at a sister company backing up an EqualLogic and have been impressed.

How are you guys protecting your Nimble SAN? I know best is to replicate to a 2nd Nimble. Can I use Veeam as my DR solution in the case of a complete Nimble failure? How would it work?

Sucks there is no snapshot integration like other vendors!

You will need to have a secondary location (host, cluster) your production VMs will be replicated to. It's recommended to install VB&R server there and let it orchestrate replications jobs. Should disaster happen, you would be able to failover VMs smoothly, failback them, once production site is up and running.

You can attach Nimble storage to DR site and use it as a datastore.

Thanks.

And just as an addition, remember we are fundamentally storage agnostic, since our software works at the hypervisor layer. Storage integration can be leveraged with supported vendors and models, but all the functionalities we offer are available with or without storage integration.

+1 for all EMC products. They let you guys have DD Boost, maybe they'll let you in on the VNX series next. :P

I think using market share is a good idea, but also you need to look towards the newer kids on the block that are up and comming.

Personally I've seen a lot of Nimbles fly out of our doors in 2014, but not so many HP units, for example. Obviously this isnt a detailed market research,

But I don't think you can neglect Nimble, Tegile, Pure Storage, just because they are still new to market.

Dean, we are not neglecting or ignoring anyone, trust me, and we are completely aware of both "old" and new storage arrays in the market.
Simply, given a defined amount of resources (man-hours of our developers) the criteria expressed by Anton are what we use to define our "priority list". It's not meant to be like "we will never support storage vendor xyz because is 8th in our list", it's just that we will probably work with others before that one.

Count this +1 for Pure Storage Flash Array. It would be nice to leverage their backend snaps and native A2A replication.

+1 for Nimble

I've been a Veeam user since probably 2009 and a Nimble customer for around a year. I highly recommend both. While one of the big selling points for Veeam to me is the fact that it is a storage-agnostic solution, having the integration available would be helpful.

Also, I've not heard any promises from a few different Nimble SEs and AMs that I've worked with so I think that's probably limited to a few. It does seem that Nimble really tries to tout the "data protection" afforded by their snapshots. I have to wonder if they are a little bit hesitant to work with Veeam since Veeam allows you to switch storage vendors at will without changing anything about your backup strategy. If so, they should get over it. I'm not interested in leaving either company and while storage snapshots are handy, they are nothing near a real backup.

+1 for Nimble
+.025 for Equallogic

we use both for different applications, but Dell's snapshot technology is such that we don't take a lot of SAN snaps with them. If we could take a few, not keep them around for long, and back them up with Veeam, it would be worth taking a look at. Nimble is our primary production storage now, and are chomping at the bit for Veeam to support storage level snapshot backups on that platform.

Hi Gostev, I've just seen your poll for VvSphere version, any chance we can get an updated production storage poll for 2015 :)

+1 for Nimble and Pure. These are the future of storage. Also looking at direct integration with Panzura as a cloud vaulting use case would be awesome as well. We are hoping to use it as a backup copy destination, with CIFS, but direct integration would be phenomenal.

I want to know why Veeam has so much cloak and dagger going on with product release and enhancements. There is virtually no information shared with the community around product release or upcoming enhancements. I would think if someone was on the fence about Veeam as a product at least some estimated timelines for product release, ie, storage integration or endpoint/physical server GA release dates would be something to get them off the fence. I really like VB&R so far, but I think there are additional things the company should work on, and product road maps are definitely one of those things.

Hi, I am afraid such uncontrolled poll will not going to work any longer, as we are seeing many forum registrations when people register on these forums just to post +1 for one specific vendor, and never post anything on these forums again. Clearly the vendor is very focused on promoting this thread within their customer base, this strategy works and will completely and utterly screw any poll results, should I create one.

Under such circumstances, if we are to run such a poll again, it will probably be in a format of a blast to our entire mailing list with the unique voting links, or something like this - and running for a very short time to prevent any possibility of promoting the importance of this poll by certain vendors to their customer base. In the end, just a few hunded of responses already provide more than sufficient margin of error - and with our mailing list size, I am sure we can easily get 1000 responses within 24 hours.

[MERGED] FEATURE REQUEST

Post by vm_backup45 »

I would like to add a feature request for Veeam integration with EMC VNX SAN snapshots for 15 or 30 minute interval point in time VM rollback/restore through the Veeam GUI. It would be ideal if Veeam itself could schedule/manage snapshots on the SAN directly. Then for a restore it would be ideal if Veeam could take a snapshotted LUN with multiple VMs on it and restore one of the VMs to a specific snapshot point in time via the Veeam GUI. I believe you already have similar functionality for NetApp SANs in 8.0.

It will be useful for me if Veeam could integrate IBM Storwize V7000 storage snapshots (called FlashCopy). I have many performance issues trying to commit my delta VMDKs on virtual machines > 1 To, I need 3 or 4 hours to backup VMDKs and 3 or 4 hours to commit deltas.
