+ TEGILE.

Kinda want to buy them and might not due to lack of Veeam integration.

Although, I might buy them and dump Veeam since it doesn't look Veeam will ever support combining VVOLs with StorageSnapshots in Nimble :-(

Veeam fully supports VVOLs for a couple of years now, and VVOLs enable backup from storage snapshots natively.

As a matter of fact, pretty much every storage vendor I know is in talks with Veeam at the moment. So, technically speaking, every vendor can claim that - and it will not be a lie for them to say. But merely "being in talks" does not mean anything - we still need to prioritize vendor integrations on our end.

Support for DELL Compellent would be great.

I would second the Compellent support. I know historically Dell was a big competitor of Veeam, but I wonder if this has changed with them selling off their software division.

As Compellent customers, what are you hearing from DELL in regards to Compellent future given EMC acquisition? Do they share with your its sales trajectory, or any other metrics when you come to buy another unit? I am asking because I definitely expect them to do some "portfolio optimizations" following EMC acquisition due to huge storage offerings overlap. And we would not want to invest into integration with storage that may be discontinued... thus, we had all decisions involving DELL and EMC storage on hold for now, until there's more certainty what storage lines are going to survive.

Other than that, some competition is not a blocker - we have some overlap with almost all storage vendors that we are integrating with.

That makes sense on your end. I have asked this question myself since it does seem a bit extreme to have three different storage lines at this point (EMC, SC, and PS). However being on the more technical end it is possible I haven't had access to the correct contacts. When I have asked about this I tend to get differing answers depending on who I ask. So I guess the answer for me currently is to wait and see how the whole situation plays out.

My comment about the competition being a blocker was actually from a thread I found from a couple of years ago (vmware-vsphere-f24/san-snapshot-support ... 29079.html). So I was curious if this had changed. But it looks like there are other factors now, which is perfectly understandable.

What has changed in regards to that comment is we've grown up much, and now every storage vendor wants (or at least more willing) to work with us, because we drive storage revenue - which is much higher margin business than software. Veeam is hard to ignore these days with our 260K+ user base, and our customers obviously prefer to buy storage that we integrate with. So for every 10 cents some companies would lose not selling their software, they will make 1 dollar selling storage. And those who refuse to work with us often just lose $1.10 :D because customers still prefer Veeam.

As an Equallogic customer, everything I've seen is about unifying PS and SC management consoles, so both can be manged from a common console. I haven't seen anything to suggest a decision has been made about EMC/Compellent placement even internally.

[MERGED] IS Veeam playing Favorites with Storage Vendors

Post by jhouse »

I'm a Veeam Customer and have been waiting for a long time for our storage vendor to get the Universal API for Storage so they can start Development with the API. They could not get in on the Storage list when the first API's were done. We have tried as a veeam customer to talk to Matt Carpenter about this and have made many calls with no call's   back. The storage vendor has tried many times to see if the can speed up the process with no answers. We thought that veeam was Storage neutral but with these actions it appears not to seem so. Do we need to start looking at another backup software? I hope not.

Tegile is our storage system.

The addition of Universal Storage API will accelerate development of new integrations, but Veeam still needs to perform full QC testing of each integration to ensure reliability and supportability. This requires significant effort and time, because we perform long-term stability testing. Thus, we still need to prioritize vendors using multiple factors just as we did before - and can't just allow everyone to build and release integrations at will.

So he can get the straight scoop on how Tegile can make this happen and not get the runaround.

Bringing this up again 8 months later in case anybody at Veeam is listening. I'm evaluating Veaam, and we use Compellent arrays. If it doesn't work with native snapshots then that's a big strike against it.

I have been using Veeam as my primary backup solution for few years.
I have seen Veeam supporting other storage vendors but haven't got any updates for Tegile integration yet.
I have talked with some of the local Veeam personals but they didn't have any plans.
Veeam will become even better with Tegile integration.

I was disappointed to not see Tegile as a supported vendor when v10 was announced. It's been long enough now, get it done!

We've been using Veeam for 3+ years and still waiting for Tegile support. It's the last feature we need to make Veeam = 10/10 for us!

Please add Tegile integration ASAP!

@Anton Gostev,
How does the WD Acquisition change Veeam's position here please? Tegile is now part of the largest storage player on the planet.

Could you explain a bit more what you mean John? As you can see from this thread we do listen (for example Nimble is a perfect example how this thread helps pushing).
