Is it possible to load file list from GuestIndexData.zip

Post by raymond.mui »

Hi,

It is actually not a question about Veeam operations.

For some reasons, I need to load the folder/file list of the whole volume, but due to permissions, not all folders are accessible (even with Domain Admins) inside Windows (server 2008). As we back up the VM with guest indexing, I want to know if it is possible to get such data from GuestIndexData.Zip that is created by Veeam Backup & Replication? What is the format of the Volume.*.fdl files?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Veeam needs an access to guest OS filesystem in order to index it, thus the account that is specified in job guest processing options should have such access. Why don't you use that account?

Thank you.

The account we use for Veeam backup is also in the domain admins group. It is capable to backup the system, but it cannot look into folders with "domain admins" being removed from the ACL.

BTW, does Veeam really iterate through the volume directory structure to make the guest index (I don't think so, right)? Or read the NTFS MFT, etc?

Thanks

As far as I know under domain admin account there is an option to change the owner in order to get permission to look into folders.
If that's not an appropriate solution in your case, then please consider using Enterprise Manager to view filesystem structure.
If you don't want to use Enterprise manager then please contact support - they might be able to help you.

Correct. It reads MFT from the snapshot during backup.

Hi P,

Thanks for your suggestion. We cannot change the owners of files as we need such info to trace who (well) own the files, so that we can ask them to do archive tasks.
