I am new to Veeam and am testing a Wan Backup. Im not sure if I have misunderstood something in the instructions.
Can somebody please tell me if this configuration will work.
Source Host
Hyper-V Role
- 5 VMs on local storage
Veeam Backup Proxy
Backup Repository
Veeam Backup Server
Veeam Repository on local storage
I am trying to backup the 5 VMs to the Backup Repository. Source Host and Backup Repository are seperated by a WAN.
From what I understand the Backup Proxy is needed for data transformations (such as compression and block filtering) and to allow throttling the traffic. Is this correct, or can I remove the Proxy altogether?
Thanks

Re: Is Proxy needed for WAN Backup?
Hi Michael,
Proxy is needed on the source site, as it retrieves VM data. If your WAN repository is on the local disk, then you do not need to install additional proxy server. Veeam repository also contains data mover processes that will talk to your proxy server and will handle the incoming compressed traffic.
Thanks!

Michael, you cannot remove the proxy server as it is the proxy who performs the actual data processing during backup. By default, onhost backup proxy will be used in your case.

Re: Is Proxy needed for WAN Backup?
OK I think I understand. I have "On-host backup" selected in the Backup Proxy field. This means that the data will be "proxied" on the source machine and then the data will travel over the WAN correctly to the remote repository.
How do I throttle that on-host proxy on the source machine?

Traffic throttling rules configuration window is available from the main Veeam B&R menu. The corresponding user guide section (p.114) will help you in creating the required rules. Thanks.mikec20 wrote:How do I throttle that on-host proxy on the source machine?
