Job problem/fix, vLab/SQL-U-AIR and support
Hello,
Today I received a fix from support, solving a general problem running my old jobs after upgrade to v5.
I had some additional questions which I hope you could help me with - I got some of them answered by support but I am not entirely satisfied with them.
1) Creation of the virtual lab works, but only if I manually create a vmKernel on the console NIC.
I can not find in the documentation or the FAQs that this step manually needs to be done .
Have I missed it ?
Answer from support: "Actually it is not mentioned regarding Virtual Lab because you should have already set it (It was mentioned when CBT is described on the page 24)"
My comment: This step is evidently crucial and should be described in more detail since no ESX server, at least no server installed by me, has got a vmkernel port group on the console vSwitch by default.
2) After creation of the vLab, I try to restore an item with SQL U-AIR feature. But after clicking finish, the wizard says, "The Virtual Lab Is Disconnected"
Any ideas why ?
Answer from support: "Unfortunately we don't support BETA versions, please go to our community forum for information and advises."
Any on the forum got a clue ?
3) Q2 brings me to a question put by me earlier: As BETA versions is not supported by Veeam, when will the U-AIR for Exchange and SQL be released ?
Before the release, I really have a problem selling the EE to customers.
4) The fix I received today, what other problems does it solve ?
Regards,
Johnny

Re: Job problem/fix, vLab/SQL-U-AIR and support
1. Good point. I will document this in FAQ, and ask to add to the User Guide. This is the way VMware works, and we assumed VMware admins would know - interacting with NFS storage requires that ESX(i) host has vmKernel in the same network as NFS server.
2. Try restoring by right-clicking running SQL VM in SureBackup session instead. This allows to skip the lab request thingy altogether... see FAQ for more information.
3. When it is ready ™ , which should happen by the end of the year. We were simply short on QC resources because of so many new features in v5.
4. I do not know what fix did you get. But you can check directly with your support specialist on full list.
Thanks!

Re: Job problem/fix, vLab/SQL-U-AIR and support
Thank you.
1) Yes, I should know that, I agree. I just thought that since everything else is automatic and easy (creating the vLab and NFS volume etc.), why fail on a step with this importance
2) I will try this, thanks.
3) I realize that you don´t have resources that are immense. I just think that this BETA-thing has been very unclear although I have visited the Veeam booth at vmWorld AND met the swedish Veeam representatives.
4) Ok, I will, I just thought you had one cumulative fix. But that is not the case then.
Regards,
Johnny

Re: Job problem/fix, vLab/SQL-U-AIR and support
1. Agree, will absolutely address this issue.
3. Well, Exchange AIR Wizard is only a supplement to U-AIR functionality, you do not not have to have it in order to perform mailbox items recovery from Exchange (or any other application). We expect most shops to leverage user-directed Exchange item recovery instead (through OWA). This has a number of benefits, as it enable secure self restores by end users - without putting load on administrators or help desk, and without granting administrator privileges to access data in other users' mailboxes (will your CEO be excited to learn that administrators have full permissions to his mailbox?). Exchange AIR wizard enables just that - admin-driven recovery directly into user's mailbox (old-style restores, as featured in "dinosaur" backup products). But it is not needed for user-driven restores.
4. Correct, we always release all hotfixes as cumulative. We have had 3-4 cumulative hotfix releases by now (and I do not know which one you've got from support, which is why I cannot tell you what it fixes). Support has documentation available for each hotfix (explaining what it fixes), so they should be able to provide that to you easily.

3. Just a little question: how do you restore mail through OWA ? as OWA don't have save mail functionnality ?

You can open the email as a web-page, and save it just like any other web-page. Typically though, you only want to extract specific information (name, email address, phone number, attachment, etc) and this is even easier to do (right-click and Save As, or copy/paste into your production Outlook). In the end, all you care about retrieving is the actual information stored in that email you lost, right?
