Can someone explain me what \Device\HarddiskVolume* refers to?

Thank you for your response.
I am surprised the list does not include SQL Server 2012 Backup and Data folders. I am in doubt now.
Also, .vmdk files are listed, but no .vhd and .vhdx. I am a little confused about that.
