License with V12 + V13 VBR

Post by dali@iae.nl »

There is no config-migration of v12 to v13.
So I will create a fresh new v13 Software Appliance install and leave the v12 VBR running for older retention. Eventually import older Retentions but importing also a load of Tapes takes a very long time.
By the way it is OK to start a complete clean and fresh V13 install from scratch.

But we have to put the current license of course in v13 VBR so then we have running v12 VBR + v13 VBR for a long time.
Questions: Is this legal to run this with the 2 VBR's and how will the license be handled? Will the VM's count double, that should be an issue.

Since you will immediately stop backups on V12 VBR, it will no longer be consuming licenses. At this point you can manually "Revoke" each license from V12 VBR in the license management dialog (if you desperately want to be completely legally clean before you install the same license in V13 VBR).

However, removing licenses manually one by one can be painful depending on the size of your infrastructure, so I personally would not worry about it - since you're in the process of backup infrastructure migration, and no one at Veeam is going to chase you for moving your license to the new backup server given the circumstances. While after 30 days of no backups, licenses will be autorevoked on V12 VBR side anyway.

Having said all that, the absolute cleanest way is to ask your Veeam sales rep for a temporary license for the duration of migration (it can be an extended Trial one which they are able to generate). Then you can have your production license in V13 VBR and the temporary license in V12 VBR. At least I know this is how we used to approach migrations as a business back in times for larger customers that were migrating between hypervisors, as in large environments the migration can take many months or even years.

Or really, just don't worry about it.

That's a great answer which we can go forward with. Did not know the auto remove of licenses after 30 days in the first place. But a trial for some time is even better.

Indeed revoking by hand for many hundreds of VM's is painful but understandable why the option to revoke them all at once vanished some versions ago.
