Locked out account in rocky linux 9.4

Post by Bjornen66 »

Hi!
I use rocky Linux 9.4 as hardened repository for Veeam. The account I created during the installation is now locked out (don't ask how I did it).
So I need to unlock the account using emergency mode. There are instructions how to change password in emergency mode but changing password does not unlock the account. So I wonder if some one here knows how to unlock the account.
Thanks

Hi,

Have you tried to get into a single-user mode and check the account with faillock utility?

Thanks!

My /var folder is empty, do I have to mount /var maybe.

Thanks

Sounds like it's time to file a support case. Please post your case ID here.

Thanks!

Just documenting here. If you have the feeling an account is locked and you are absolutely sure you did it and there are no bad actors in your network you can try to unlock it with fail lock eg

validate if an account (in this example veeamsvc) has invalid attempts with

Code: Select all

faillock --user veeamsvc
unlock or reset the account

Code: Select all

faillock --user veeamsvc --reset
Again use with care. A locked account might indicate failed attempts by bad actors
