So, there is absolutely no way to reduce the backup size then and ignore those deleted blocks of data? I'm not sure how we are going to be able to copy this data across the WAN to another site. It's just too much and it really shouldn't be.

Apart from what have been suggested by Luca and using backup copy jobs with WAN accelerators there is no other way of reducing the amount of backup data transferred.
