Low Replication speed

Post by Suderman »

Hello,

I'm using version 5 both for replication a backup purposes.

Recently I have noticed that replication jobs speeds are quite low. For backup jobs it's ok.
What I have noticed is that when replication job is starting it takes a lot of time to actually start copying the vm machine files.
During this initial time (sometimes even 20 minutes) in Vsphere client I see lot of events "Map disk region".
After that when it really starts to copy the files it's going quite well but the overall speed of the job is around 45-60 MB/s sometimes even less.

My environment is ESXi 4 u2.

Is it normal or We can improve sth. here ?

Thanks.

This is normal for replica to be slower as unlike backup it is uncompressed, plus ESXi is quite slow target overall. You can improve performance significantly by using full ESX as replication target. Thanks!

Hello,

why ESXi is slower target for replication ?

Generally our corporation is moving from ESX to ESXi.
I've heard also Vmware will focus on ESXi.

Are You going to take it somehow into consideration ?

Thanks.

Replication is slower because ESXi host doesn't have a service console, where (in case of ESX) we install a small helper agent which helps with performance and traffic efficiency. But yes, we are aware of ESX going away, and we're already working on enhancing our replication engine for ESXi targets for our next release. Thanks!
