Hello,
Our backup plan consists of 5 backup repositories (which are external hard drives) and daily backup job backing up data to a different repository every day. Basically one repository for each working day.
We want to keep as many as possible restore points on each of the repositories, however since the data size on the servers grows, every so often backup fails due to insufficient free space on the repositories and we have to manually change the retention policy then to allow the backup to work again.
Is it possible to configure Veeam backup software to manage the retention policy automatically, so that it will automatically delete the oldest restore points when there is no enough of free space to do another backup? We are using Reverse Incremental backup type.
Regards,
Adrian

Re: Managing Retention Policy Automatically – can this be do
Adrian, there's no way to make Veeam B&R handle the number of restore points to keep depending on the available free space (retention is applied at the end of the successful job run). Not sure also whether this is secure enough, since one day you could end up with very low retention for your jobs. Using built-in repository space notifications looks much safer.

Additionally, you can use Veeam ONE with the pre-defined report called Capacity Planing for Backup Repositories. You will provided with the estimation regarding the date when repository runs out of space - this will allow you to make decisions accordingly. Thanks.

Thank you for your answers.
In that case I need to lower the retention policy even more or just get larger backup disks.
Thank you again

The best strategy, indeed. If you need any further clarification, don't hesitate to let us know. Thanks.
