Migration Data from Windows 2003 to Windows 2012

Post by eversys »

We are new to Veeam... just purchased Veeam Backup & Replication. We have an old Windows 2003 file server and would like to migrate all data to a new Windows 2012 R2 file server. Could we use Veeam Backup & Replication for this?

In the past, we used tools such as "robocopy" (logged in as domain admin) to copy all data to the new destination server. Then we re-created all file shares. Mostly this worked just fine... however, sometimes we ran into problems over rights i.e. if the end-users changed the NTFS permissions on the source directories, where even the domain admin had no rights.

Any further tips of the trade of how best we perform this migration with Veeam would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

You can use file copy jobs to migrate Guest OS files. If this is a virtual server (Windows 2003 file server), you can run Veeam backup job and then restore only virtual disk that contains data and attach it to the Windows Server 2012 R2 VM.

Both source and destination servers are physical servers. Veeam can also backup/restore non-virutal volumes, folders & files - right?

In this case you can only use file copy jobs, that can copy files and folders from source to target, not backups are possible.
