Monthly full backup and incrementals

Post by twigs »

This is a question about the use of the product.
Like traditional copy environments.
Is it possible with Veeam to create a backup job where a Full copy is made on the first Saturday of each month, and the following incrementals on Saturdays, until the next first Saturday of the month that a new Full + incremental cycle begins?
I'm running multiple tests but can't find the desired result.
Thanks

Hello,

You say you've run several tests.
Just checking - did you already try activate checkbox "Create active full backups periodically" on the first Sunday of month and configure job run schedule (daily at <time> - these days - Sunday)?
What exactly did not work, can you share some details?

Thank you!

Hi Natalia.
Now the related task is missconfigured, but If I understand your explanation, in Storage-Advacend Settings. The Active full backup periodically on first Sunday of the month must be activated and then in the Schedule select the Sundays to run backup. If in Backup mode Incremental (recommended) is select to, and the retention policy are 5 restore points.
What would be the result of the backups?
Thanks

Yes, if you schedule backups on Sundays and configure Active Full to run on the first Sunday of the month, I believe that's what you are looking for (if I understood your configuration requirements correctly).

As for retention - in fact, it gives you some time gap when you can use the "old" versions of the backed up data.
So if the new chain is created (which - in your case - happens on the first Sunday of a month), the old one is not removed until you get a proper number of the restore points.
To get more about the retention, you can check this animated explanation from our kb.

Thanks!
