Mount backup, browse vm files
Hi,
I would like to know if it's posible to "mount" a veeam backup file on a Windows based platform, and browse the content on a vmdk/vhdk level?
Kind Regards,
Bastiaan

Hello Bastiaan,
It’s possible to mount the backup file only while performing a file level recovery from specific restore point. When its initiated and backup browser is opened you can use regular windows browser to view the files in C:\VeeamFLR directory.

Yes, i'm familair with FLR. But I would like to know if it's posible to browse/mount the backup on hypervisor/vmdk/vhd level. We would like to mount a hyper-v backup, and start a convert from hyperv .vhd files to vmdk without the need to restore first. This would same time.
Kind Regards,
Bastiaan

Unfortunately, it’s not possible. From the top of my head, you can start an Instant Recovery without powering VM on and then try to perform the needed conversion. But I would like to know if it's posible to browse/mount the backup on hypervisor/vmdk/vhd level.

Re: Mount backup, browse vm files
We have a VMware only infrstructure, and want to restore an Hyper-V backup. It's not posible to do Instant VM recovery, nor restore an Hyper-V to Vmware. So if there's a mount option, it would eliminate one step.Dima P. wrote: Unfortunately, it’s not possible. Will v9 bring hypervisor independed restores?

There's no way to either mount or restore Hyper-V backup into VMware environment. What you could do is use VM files restore option to restore virtual disks on any Windows server added to Veeam B&R console and then proceed with conversion.

Yes I know, thats why I'm asking if mounting on the repository server, on vhd level is posible...foggy wrote:There's no way to either mount or restore Hyper-V backup into VMware environment. There are three steps:
1 Restore to windows repository server
2 Convert from hyper-v to vmware
3 Import to infrastructire
Therefore my original question: To consolidate the first and second step into one, is there a way to mount the backup on vmdk/vhd level so we can point our converter to the mounted vhd, so we let the converter read directly from the mount?

I can't think of any other way to do this.

Re: Mount backup, browse vm files
There is a complicated scenario that might work. You can enable Hyper-V role inside some Windows-based machine, add it as a hyper-v host to a backup server, restore a VM to it, back it up with Endpoint Free, and then restore its files to .vmdk format.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Mount backup, browse vm files
Why not doing like Dima suggests, and have even a small nested hyper-v VM, then the process would be:
1- run instant VM recovery without powering on the VM
2- run vmware converter or another tool to convert the VM to vsphere directly into the vsphere environment
The VM at that point would be available to be powered on after just two steps.
