Moving from all in one VBR to Hardened Linux repository

Post by holland.g.david »

Hi at the moment I have an all in one VBR installation running on Windows server 2019 using ReFS it is running the VBR server and the repositories. I want to move to using a Hardened Linux repository, I have a new server and storage ready to go but would like to know what the steps are to get from where I am to where I need to be. I'm happy to read through KB articles for steps if thats easier than spelling out the details of each step.

Let me know if there are also more details you need to answer my question properly.

Hi holland.g.david, welcome to the forums.

First, biggest question is "will the Hardened Repository be backed by an XFS filesystem?" Main reason for this is that XFS supports fast clone, so if the ReFS repository was also using fast clone, targeting an XFS file system will allow us to use fast clone and preserve the space savings.

Backup move is a good way to do this -- you can do it backup by backup for more control over the migration and it will move the backups to the target repository, using Fast Clone if the repository supports it.

Probably this is the easiest way to handle it, and just go backup by backup.

Thanks for the info, yes from what I have seen I will being using an XFS filesystem. At the moment I just have the hardware, and nothing on it I’m open to using whatever is best. My main problem I think is a complete lack of any Linux knowledge. Has anyone seen a step by step guide of from OS install to hardened immutable ready Repository?
I’ve seen Veeam have a beta ISO but that doesn’t support software RAID at the moment which is what I will need to use.

Glad to assist, and glad to hear it's XFS.

I would advise if you're looking for a step-by-step guide that helps you with the Linux-ey parts as well as the Veeam part, check out this thread from one of our users. It's a very comprehensive guide (based on Ubuntu), but from what I remember it's a very good way to get used to Linux and also get a working repository set up and I think should give you pointers. You don't have to stick with Ubuntu, but there's no reason you can't, it's largely a matter of comfort in management.
