MS Office 365 ending Basic Auth

Post by molan »

Microsoft announced they are permanently disabling Basic Auth Oct 2022
https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/ ... e-online-s...

Both of the above mentioned Veeam products (probably others) are still using "basic auth" to send email alerts. Essentially this means that 1 year from today they will no longer be able to send us email alerts.

I opened a ticket with support to try and find out if Veeam is taking steps to update their software before this deadline, but support hasn't been able to answer the question and advised I post it my question here as this is (supposedly) a better way to get the Veeam developers attention.

Hopefully the Dev team sees this post and can simply reply back to say they will have a fix out shortly for this. This security change by MS is going to cause all kinds of headache when it drops next year. I have a list that is way way to long of items that will no longer be able to send email when it Drops...

Veeam is aware of that. And will work on this after VBO365 6.0 is released in Q4 this year.
Veeams Rick Vanover talked in a youtube video (community recap) about this topic.

Personally, I don‘t see a shortly fix for that, because it depends partly on microsoft and their willingness to create the necessary APIs. But I trust veeam to find a good solution together with Microsoft.

For an example, there is already a Teams API to backup Teams messages. The disadvantage of this API, it will have a cost, if you use it. This gives me a headache, because I expect more and more of such „not free backup APIs“. :)

The Teams API you mention is part of the MS Graph API. The MS Graph API currently has functionality to send send email messages Via the send an email post command

Here is an example of using the MS Graph API using powerhsell https://practical365.com/upgrade-powers ... ilmessage/

https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/g ... h-explorer

It would seem like a simple add for the Veeam Office365 backup tool since it is already setup as an Azure App, but using this as a solution with Backup and Replication would take work on the part of any Veeam customers.

I agree MS should give us the solution since they are causing the problem, but I am not confident they will.
I also agree this isn't a quick fix. But it would be nice to hear something official from Veeam to say they will be addressing it.
