MSSQL Backups for 200+ Databases

Post by AFCUIT »

Greetings,

I recently opened Veeam Support Case # 00535096, because I was no longer able to backup up our SQL 2012 Server running on Windows Server 2012 Standard once the number of databases exceeded 200. I was told there is currently no support, nor are there any immediate plans to support servers with 200+ SQL databases.

I'm sure this will present a problem for many people who do not have the budget to build another SQL server for the additional databases.

Can you tell me when Veeam plans to implement support for more than 200 SQL databases running on Server 2012?

Thank you.

Hi Russ, we prioritize features solely depending on the amount of requests. I will check how many requests we had so far. I will also check with R&D on what is the reason for this limit (as this might be a Microsoft limitation). Thanks!

Although I don't know your specific configuration, I suspect this is caused by the default thread limit on the SQL database due to the fact that the VSS writer requires 3 threads per database. That means that performing a VSS freeze of 200+ databases would require 600+ threads to be available. Based on the specific configuration of your database you may not even have this many threads available. Below is another forum thread with a discussion about this.

Let me know if that helps to resolve your issue or provide some more details if not.
