Multi-Site Protection / Recovery

Post by LEWISF »

Hello everyone -

This is probably the 5th post about this topic I have seen in this thread :) (I read the other 4. Great information.)

My dilemma is very similar to the other designs that I have read about but I do have one key difference.

Here's our layout.

Primary datacenter with VxRail. Well call it PREMDC1
Veeam Backup and Recover Console (BRC) and Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager (BEM) live in this site on separate VMs. (BEM I understand is optional since we currently only have one BRC server).
We are on the latest V12 version
NAS is onsite @ PREMDC1

Disaster recovery site in the cloud running VMWare Cloud on AWS. We'll call it CLOUDR1
Replication of VMS is from PREMDC1 to CLOUDR1 is done by VMWare Cloud Services
Replication of the BRC and BEM servers IS handled by Veeam from PREMDC1 to CLOUDR1

3rd party cloud provider for offsite backups.

Backup Jobs
Backup jobs are configured to use 3 SOBRs with the NAS and 3 cloud S3 buckets.

Problem
We need to test a scenario where we live out of CLOUDR1 and the NAS has FAILED.

I am meeting with my cloud provider this week to discuss options.
From other post I see that with V12, multiple object storage buckets can be added to a SOBR. This sounds like it might be part of the solution.
The problem is I can't get the data from the NAS if it is no longer available.
So how do I get the data from the current cloud buckets if we have to move to CLOUDR1?
If multiple S3 buckets can be used in an SOBR, should I now configure another S3 bucket for my current SOBRs with the 2nd bucket being used for CLOUDR1 restores OR can I just add new buckets and modify each job to use the current SOBR and the new buckets NOT part of a SOBR? Is that possible?

TIA. Let me know if my explanation needs clarity.

Lewis

Hi Lewis,

My recommendation would be to enable the Copy policy to copy backups to the Capacity Tier as soon as they appear on the Performance Tier. In the event of NAS failure, the required data will be obtained from the copies stored on the Capacity Tier. Please refer to this section of the user guide for more information.

Thanks!
