Need to clarify with Synthetic Full backup operations

Post by dgapinski »

Hello,

I want to make sure I understand this before I use Synthetic Fulls - say I had a job that had regular full backups 1x/mo and synthetic fulls 1x week. If I restore from a point in time used by an incremental, does it hearken to the last full backup or synthetic full?

Thanks!

I should probably explain a little more too. My aim in asking is to see if a synthetic full can be made and then deleted without any impact.

Dan, to restore from an incremental restore point, you need entire backup chain up to the nearest previous full, be it either active or synthetic. Both types of full backups are equal in terms of their role in the backup chain, the only difference between them is in the way they are created. So, answering to your last question, you cannot delete synthetic full without impacting increments depending on it.
