Netapp Ontap Support for 9.11, 9.12

Post by EcoboostPerformance »

Your current support matrix says, ONTAP cluster-mode versions 8.3 to 9.10

I believe this is due to the fact that in Ontap 9.12 it was originally spec'd to de-support ZAPI. ZAPI has been extended and is there in 9.12.x although in Ontap 9.13 the veeam Netapp integration will require a full re-write due to the removal of ZAPI support.

Hello Ryan,
as far as I see, the latest Ontap GA version is 9.11 https://mysupport.netapp.com/site/info/version-support

I don't see a question, but I can add a statement from Veeam side: we claim support as soon as we tested it and it works. For Netapp with Ontap 9.11, we will change the user guide soon. Tests just finished and 9.11 is supported

Best regards,
Hannes

Right, 9.11 is now officially supported, we will talk about 9.12 when it is out. This is not related to ZAPI2REST transition.

Hi @foggy @HannesK

I believe the 9.12 version (which is cloud version) has been out a few weeks already, and the 9.12.1 - which is the on-premises version - will be out very soon. Sounds like some exciting new features might be included, lets hope so when it's officially GA.

Hi Butha, thanks for the heads up, we will plan the internal tests to claim 9.12 support.

Hi Franc, we're in the process of upgrading the lab for internal tests. Please allows us some time to do this.

From what I've read, 9.12 is the last version of OnTap to suppot ZAPI, but we should be able to manually re-enable it in at least a few more future releases which could let Veeam kick the can down the road for migration to REST API. Still... is there any plan to actually put the work in to make the migration to REST?

That said, according to NetApp's communication on Feb 20, 2023, ZAPI EOA is deferred to January 2024 with ONTAP 9.13.1 to be the final version to support it.

Hi,

Is Ontap 9.13.1 supported with V11/V12? And also, 9.12 and onwards supports immutable snapshots. Will Veeam (V12) support this also in a future update when backing up to snapshot?

Hello,
as the system requirements state, up to 9.12 is supported.

On the immutable snapshot feature: you are asking for the plain snapshot orchestration without "backup from storage snapshot", right?

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi,

9.13.1 is in QA at the moment, I will update you here once it is supported. As it was only released recently it always takes some time to validate new releases.
As for immutable snapshots, there is no short-term plan to support it for NetApp.

Thanks

Hi,

any idea when it will be supported then? Are you currently testing?

I mean the Veeam feature where you can select an ONTAP snapshot as a backup repository and also on the function to manually create snapshots from the Veeam console. A checkbox 'create immutable snapshot' in there would be nice. ;-)

Thanks for the update. Would a pre- and post script of the job(s) to temporarily set the global recovery queue hours to 0 and restore it again after the job is finished also work?

Hi all,

ONTAP 9.13.1 is now officially supported and listed in our helpcenter:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... e-systems-

Please be sure you read the following KB carefully as 9.13.1 changed some snapshot/volume deletion logic that will impact your installation:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4480

We aim to address this change in Veeam Backup & Replication 12a.

Thanks
Stefan Renner

Hi All,
Good to hear Ontap 9.13.1 is already officially supported , but is there already a planned release to transition from the ontapi zapi to the rest api.
I understand that the zapi is still available in 9.13.1 but the new api is also available so is there already a transition planned ?

Kind regards,
JWH

we are currently researching this topic but there is no ETA we can share at this point. As you mentioned it is still available and remains available for some time.

Thanks

1) Can you confirm if Veeam Backup & Replication 12.1.2.172 uses REST APIs with Ontap 9.13.1 and above rather than zapi?

2) Are there any configurations changes to be made on Veeam Backup & Replication to start using REST APIs once Ontap has been upgraded to version that supports REST APIs?

1) no it does not use REST it continues to use zapi which still is fully supported by NetApp till 9.18
2) essentially 1) answers this questions, currently we don't use REST so no changes needed. as soon as REST would be used we will make sure that there is no impact on the upgrade path.

does Veeam 12.3 already use REST for the communication with Ontap 9.15.1? Our Netapp continuously reports that ZAPI is being used. I know it's still functional, but we want our cluster-health to be green instead of yellow ;-)

No. 12.3 is still on ZAPI.
As mentioned on my last post, it will work for some more releases and we are aware of the REST change and in very close contact with NetApp.
Sorry about the cluster-health, not sure NetApp Support has any option to help you out with that.

Thanks
Stefan Renner
