Newbie Veeam Configuration

Post by Safe & Secure »

I'm impressed with the capability of the Veeam solutions, but there are so many solutions.

We want to centrally administrator backups for a number of different remote small businesses (Multi-tenant). We would like to backup to a NAS or USB connected drive that is local to the workstations and servers, and also backup to a third party cloud provider like Wasabi. Can this be done? What Veeam products would be used to accomplish this? Most of the servers are physical though some are VMware or Hyper-V VM's.

Hi Jim!

I would recommend to take a look at Veeam Backup & Replication if you're looking for all-in-one solution which can provide centralized management for backup jobs:
1) Image-level VM backup for both VMware and Hyper-V platforms is available.
2) Built-in management for Veeam agent backups allows you to protect physical servers.
3) You can use NAS as a repository for backups, just add it in Veeam B&R infrastructure.
4) If you would like to use cloud connect feature, you may look for a service provider here.
5) Available options with Wasabi are described in this article however you may contact them directly to know if there are other options.

You may backup physical servers by using standalone Veeam Agents for Windows and Linux machines.
Backups to USB drives directly attached to protected servers are possible with Veeam Agents.

Thanks!

PetrM,

Thanks!

I will review your suggestions.

Would we use one instance of Veeam Backup & Replication or would there need to be an instance of Veeam Backup & Replication at each site?

Though not in the description above, is it possible to backup traveling laptops directly to a cloud location like Wasabi bypassing the local area network? Can these backups still be monitored and managed via Veeam Backup & Replication?

Are there any use-case documents that might be helpful in considering possible backup architecture solutions using Veeam software?

Everything can be done from the single backup server as long as it has connectivity to all remote locations.

As to your second question, currently Veeam Agents cannot write directly to object storage.

Thanks!

Hi Jim!
Can these backups still be monitored and managed via Veeam Backup & Replication?
You will have a possibility to create and manage agent jobs by Veeam Backup&Replication if agents operate in managed mode:
agents are deployed remotely from a backup server which is running Veeam B&R.

Veeam B&R provides html-reports and job statistics view so that you know basic information about jobs: status, completion time, average processing rate, amount of processed data etc.
But if you're looking for an advanced monitoring solution, you may take a look at Veeam ONE which proposes different monitoring options for the whole backup infrastructure (including agent jobs monitoring).

Are there any use-case documents that might be helpful in considering possible backup architecture solutions using Veeam software?
Actually, you can start with this white paper. You can find more info about best practices for Veeam B&R in this document.
Feel free to use our resource library to look for more white papers, how-to videos, webinars etc.

Thanks!
