NFSv4 as a repository

Post by ITENOS-Kai »

Hi there,
i just wanted to ask if NFSv4 will be support in near future as a backup repository.
Currently we have to discuss with our group security, whether NFSv3 is allowed to use or not. Of course they would like to use v4.

Kind regards,
Kai

Hi Kai

NFS v4.1 is supported as a backup target.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... kup-target
Network Attached Storage (NAS) able to present its capacity as NFS share (protocol version 3.0 and 4.1 only) or SMB/CIFS share (any protocol version). Using SMB protocol for non-continuously available (CA) file shares is not recommended for reliability reasons. NFS shares are supported both for direct operation and when mounted to a Linux repository server.
We don't recommend SMB or NFS as backup storage. General server with local attached disks are recommended as backup storage. With SMB or NFS, you can't use our FastClone feature for space less synthetic full backups.

Thanks

@Mildur, is this only true for SMB on Linux/NAS devices? As I can read here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... rosoft_smb
Fast Cloning should work with SMB and ReFS on Windows machines if you meet all the requirements. In that case you usually would not use SMB as the repository type but still in theory it should work right?

On NFS Shares you cannot use FastClone.
On SMB Shares, FastClone can be used if some requirements are met. But honestly, I never saw someone using SMB with FastClone.
