Non VMware (non-virtual) backup possible?

Post by davidkillingsworth »

Hello,

This might be a silly questions, but I couldn't find an answer in the FAQ.

Can Veeam Backup & Replication backup a non-VM guest? Let's say I have 2 bare metal servers.

1) VMware with 4 VM guests
2) Bare Metal Windows 2008 R2 server

My Veeam installed on a VM guest (Windows 2008 R2).

Could I backup item #2?

Second question.

Could Veeam be installed on item #2 and backup the ESXi host and all of the VM guests of item #1?

Thanks.

Hello!

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution for virtual machines only. Replication and backup of physical servers is not supported.
Regarding your second question: yes, you can install Veeam B&R on a physical machine to backup VMs on your ESXi host (but not the host itself).

Thanks.

Thanks for the answer. So to be clear.

I can install Veeam on a Windows 2008 R2 server which is either a guest VM on an ESXi host, or a stand alone / bare metal Windows 2008 R2 server.

What I cannot do is backup a stand alone / bare metal server.
