Object storage repository(AWS S3)

Post by Kei »

Hi

I would like to know Object Storage Repository (AWS S3) in detail on Veeam v12.

Q1. Can we conduct backup directly to all storage class (S3 Standard, S3 Standard-IA, S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Deep Archive ) not using Scale Out Backup Repository ?

Q2. When I create Object Storage Repository as S3 Glacier, Archiver Appliance is required.
Q2-1. When I will use Managed by Agent backup, could you tell me the backup data traffic flow?
I assume bellow traffic flow.
Veeam agent → (Internet) → Archiver Appliance on AWS → (Internet) → S3 on AWS
Q2-2. I think we can select the Archiver Appliance instance size, could you tell me the sizing information?
Q2-3. Archiver Appliance always exists and power on on AWS environment, my understanding correct?

Thank you.

S3 Standard, S3 Standard-IA --> Yes
S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Deep Archive --> SOBR with S3 Standard, S3 Standard-IA in Performance tier or capacity tier required
Veeam Agent must backup to the performance tier first. In V12 this can be a S3 Standard / S3 Standard-IA bucket. Traffic flow will be:
Veeam Agent --> S3 Standard / S3 Standard-IA bucket --> Archiver Appliance --> S3 Glacier
Q2-2. I think we can select the Archiver Appliance instance size, could you tell me the sizing information?
We have a kb article for V11. Let me check if it's still valid in V12:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4317
Q2-3. Archiver Appliance always exists and power on on AWS environment, my understanding correct?
The appliance should be deleted after archiving the restore point.

Hi Fabian

Thank you for your quick reply and I understood.
Let me ask additional question. I would like to know restore operation.

I assume that I will use Entire Restore from recovery media and File Restore using Veeam agent.

1.Entire Restore from recovery media
1-1. When I restore from S3 standard or IA, will restore target server get the backup data from S3 directly via Internet ?
1-2. When I restore from S3 Glacier, could you tell me the operation flow?(or same operation flow as 1-1)

2.File Restore using Veeam agent
2-1. When I restore from S3 standard or IA, will restore target server get the backup data from S3 directly via Internet ?
2-2. When I restore from S3 Glacier, could you tell me the operation flow? (or same operation flow as 2-1)

Thank you.
