Oracle Online Redo Logs
Hi there,
we are planning to backup a Windows Server system with an Oracle 12 database.
As far as I understood, Veeam is able to perform a full backup e.g. daily and is also able to backup the archive logs frequently. The smallest value according to some guides/screenshots seems to be 5 minutes.
Meaning in the worst case, we are able to restore from Veeam repository the latest "full backup" and additionally the processed archive logs. But in the worst case, the last 5 minutes (redo logs) would be missing.
Is it possible to also backup the redo logs into the Veeam repository? Should the redo logs be backed up to a different location?
It would be nice, if a complete backup without loss or with at least the smallest possible loss of data could be handled by Veeam B+R.
Best regards

Veeam B&R doesn't process online redo logs.

So as a conclusion, in the worst case 5 minutes processed data are gone when using Veeam to backup an oracle VM, correct?

Hi UT2015,
to come back to your question. Yes, Veeam will backup the Oracle redo logs to the same location where the VM backup files are stored. Log backups are storead as .vlb files.

HI UT2015
I was also discussing this item with veeam support in a ticket.
If you have not already set up the ora backup via veeam consider the following :
veeam first copies ALL archive log files AT ONCE to a new location (e.g. /tmp on Unix/Linux respectively, maybe to \temp on windows !?) and AFTER the copy has finished it backs up all the copied archive log files to a destination defeined by you.
In our case this means for example : our archive log directory is sized to 100 GB - now we need a second location (/tmp or any other "work" folder) that is also of the same size.
From my point of view a poor approach.
I left this appraisal as a hint/recommendation to be forwarded to veeam product development.

Hi UT2015
as I realize now there was a misunderstanding on my site.
A second directory of the same size is NOT required.
Consequently I withdraw my previous statement.

Hi cxwsrei,
thanks for your posts.
Because Veeam cannot process the redo logs online, we offered another solution to our customer without using Veeam.
Best regards,
