Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Hello,
Evaluating Veeam module to backup Solaris servers, I am facing issue
preventing jobs to run concurrently (backuping different path from same host).
I did fill a post for that blocking point.
As Oracle Rman backups are currently generated by Oracle DB Servers to a master repository,
and a a possible workaround, I am thinking to suggest DBAs to review Oracle Backup procedures,
to redirect backups directly to Veeam thru RMAN plug-in.
Any support for Oracle Rman Plugin for Veeam, knowing DB servers are Solaris on SPARC?
Any roadmap ? Doc ?
Reworded, how to backup big Oracle DBs on SPARC using Veeam ?
Thanks !

Veeam Plug-in for RMAN (Solaris) is available since Backup & Replication v10.

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
@Andreas Neufert,
Thanks for your reply. Still a question for your :
From the doc, I rode you can configure how many dbf backups to keep on repository
or Recovery Window-Based Retention.
What's not clear yet for me reading doc is how tape copy integration works.
Can I create a Tape Copy Job of Rman Plug-in backups for longer retention than the on-disk repository one ?
Will backup retention settings sync with rman retention or not, meaning once a backup
is deleted from repository but with valid Tape Copy, is it also expired from RMAN Catalog,
preventing to be recovered ?
Can a plug-in backup removed from rman catalog (but still in repository or on tape) be re-imported in rman catalog ?
In case of a recover, how will Veeam act for backups from Tape Only (with removed/expired repository copy) ?
Do I first need to restore tape copy to repository or will veeam bring back tape backup to repository automatically ?
I mean, can I have a Recovery Window-Based Retention of 3 days (db daily backup being full) on repository for eg but a longer
period backup retention (2 months for eg) to tape still registered in rman's catalog ?

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Any idea about my previous update ?
Can I create a Tape Copy Job of Rman Plug-in backups for longer retention than the on-disk repository one ?
or, in other words, can Rman plug-in Backups be kept for a longer period on Tape than just on disk (like 3 months on tape and latest 1 week on disk) ?
Thanks,
TH

Hi Thierry,
There is no integration with tape jobs, you can create file to tape job but should consider it as completely separate process. You will need to make sure that the chain processed to tape is consistent: it has full pont, all subsequent increments, autobackups.
You can import backup to Veeam database and map the job, the workflow is described on this page of our help center.
Then, you need to synchronize RMAN catalog and Veeam database: you can restore control file, please refer to this example. Another option is to run crosscheck on RMAN side. Alternatively, you can catalog backup pieces using RMAN if the catalog is empty. Please keep in mind that there is no way to import everything automatically, all steps mentioned above must be performed manually.
Thanks!

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Hello,
I have different Oracle DB Server, including RAC clusters. Each Db Server has more than 1 DB, let's say 12-15DBs/DB Server.
Actually, most db backups are full ones (if you can take a full, take a full adage), backuped one by one and stored on a 8TB file repository.
Knowing I must keep db backups for 2-3 months, How can I use plugin to backup these dbs ?
If you assume a 2TB basis, including Oracle Redolog archines,
If I count 2*2*30 = 120TB. So I need 150TB on disk without having a tape backup...
Worst if I count for 3 months : 2*3*30 = 180TB so 200TB ...
Even with 1TB daily backups, 75/100TB accordingly.
without having a tape copy to protect against repository fs corruption or cryptovirus...
I have Avg 12TB Oracle Db Storage Space. If I need to backup-copy all these backups, (so diskspace size *2) to then
create a tape-job copy, I will need 100/200TB *2 = 200/400TB online dedicated storage space on 2 different repository servers ...
Having 2 copies on same server is a non-sense.
Any idea how to just keep 1 or 2 weeks on disk and the remaining retention just on tape,
with an easy recovery way, like VM backup recover to repository before FLR ... ?
When a disaster occurs, having simple procedures is always the most efficient.
I also tought backuping Oracle RMAN to file and then backup file to veeam using Veeam for Solaris agent
as I am now doing with Networker but I am facing another problem, being only 1 backup job can run at a time...

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Hello,
You can leverage file to tape job and store older backups (let's say 2,5 months) on tapes whereas 2 last weeks are stored on the primary repository and RMAN retention is configured accordingly: for last 2 weeks.
However, there is no automatic recovery way, you will need to import older backups and then synchronize RMAN catalog and repository file system states.
One more idea is to setup a secondary storage and to use backup copy job instead of tapes.
Thanks!

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Not easy to implement, need extra repository (Server and Storage), longer recoveries ...
but another question yet if I can abuse
Can different rman plugin backups run concurrently ? Agent job doesn't ...
Thanks

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
Veeam supports parallel processing with the Plug-ins and in a combination with other backups.
It is just a question if RMAN can start your requested tasks in parallel if you start RMAn multiple times.

Re: Oracle RMAN Support (on Solaris Sparc) support ?
No, what I mean is : can I start multiple RMAN Backups from SAME db server at same time. (backuping different DBs from same
server concurrently).
Ex: As different Oracle db server Instances can run on a single server, having 2 (or more) jobs running,
one at 08:00pm, for sample, taking 1 hour to complete, and another oracle db instance from same server
at 08:30pm, while #1 is still running ...
Veeam Solaris Agent only support 1 session a time.
I do not mean starting different rman backups from different db servers, 1 job a time, or with other backups running. ...

Yes, it's possible with RMAN plug-in.ThierryF wrote:can I start multiple RMAN Backups from SAME db server at same time. (backuping different DBs from same
