Proxy and Deduplication
Hello,
I'm seting up a new server to store my backup Jobs
This physical server running Windows Server 2012 R2 and got local storage of 40TB.
My Veeam B&R Server current location is on the same network and site that my snew server but I planned to move it to DR site.
I gonna need a Proxy on my Main site to optimize my backup job. Does it possible to install Veeam Proxy on physical server ? or I have to install Proxy on VM Vmware ?
About deduplication, how to do for 40TB volume ? Set up deduplication in Windows side, Veeam Side or Both ?
I run Veam B&R 9.5 last update

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Also I would highly recommend you to read old threads (this, for instance) about your topic and our FAQ.
BR,
Alex
The role of a backup proxy can be assigned to a dedicated Microsoft Windows server (physical or virtual). By default, it's assigned to a backup server.Does it possible to install Veeam Proxy on physical server ? or I have to install Proxy on VM Vmware ?
There is no universal answer for your question as far as in every case deduplication performance might vary. I would recommend you to test several scenarios and compare the results. In case of the windows server deduplication setup follow this kb.About deduplication, how to do for 40TB volume ? Set up deduplication in Windows side, Veeam Side or Both ?
Also I would highly recommend you to read old threads (this, for instance) about your topic and our FAQ.

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Thanks for your answer.
How can I can assign it to physical ?
Because when I try it trough "Backup Infrasctructure > Backup Proxies > Add.." I just can for VMware or Hyper-V.
Ok I gonna read this old threads.

You will add windows server on the later stage. How can I can assign it to physical ?

Also check the requirements for the backup proxy.
If you have any questions left, let me know.

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
It's little bit weird to use VMware to install Backup Proxy on W2012R2 physical no ?

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Nothing wired, you specify virtualization platform for the proxy.

Ok but server where I want to install it is not virtualized but physical. It's why I think it's weird.
I think there's something I don't understand. I gonna read posts that you linked me

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Only the "virtual appliance" transport mode requires the proxy to be a VMWare VM.

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Fixed
I had really huge misunderstanding.
I selected Backup Proxy for Vmware infrastructure, and "Network" for Transport mode.
It works now
Thanks everyone

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Firstly you need to specify what virtualization platform proxy server will be used for: VMware or Hyper-V. Why? Because components installed on proxy server as well as available processing modes differ, depending on virtualization type.Ok but server where I want to install it is not virtualized but physical. It's why I think it's weird.
Physical and virtual proxy servers (of the same virtualization type) run the very components. So, such separation in UI (assuming we had one) wouldn't make a lot of sense.
Hope it helps.
Thanks!

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
Last Questions about Proxy.
now my proxy is set up on my server who host my backup repo.
Does it a best practice ? It Doesn't reduce performances ?
Maybe it will be better if I set up proxy on other server ?

Re: Proxy and Deduplication
For simple deployment you can stick to all-in-one model, just make sure that the given server is stuffed with required resources - should be capable of running both roles at the same time. Check system requirements section of our Help Center for more information regarding that. Thanks!
